You can come into pigeon from down dog or all-fours position. Bring one knee forward and take it towards the outside of the mat (outside of your hand) Bring your foot forward as much as you can without putting strain on the knee. Square both hipbones to the front of your mat. Now walk? your back foot further back (keeping the hips squared). Take a nice deep breath and relax, then spread the toes and make your legs strong. That's it!

There is no need for your hips to touch the ground in this pose, just make sure your hips are "squared" to the front? of your mat (left and right side of the hips are in line) and keep the toes of the front leg spreading wide and press them into the floor to protect your knee. As you will keep practicing this pose, your hips will open and come down to the floor.

Inspiring message? -3 Love and peace to you :)

In pigeon pose my hips don't seem to touch the ground at all? - are my hips extremely tight, or am I doing the pose incorrectly? At any right, I love the message of this video and will begin to keep this lesson with me in my daily life. Thank you!

I am really hoping to incorporate this sequence into a routine but I'm struggling? with the pigeon pose... can you talk me through it?? I'm just beginning yoga and I'm not sure of the proper technique...

Thanks I look forward to more of your videos. = ]?

I will think about doing a sequence for? an all-levels love-handles yoga practice (could use it myself, actually :) In the meantime, check out Ester's awesome 20 minute energizing yoga flow!

thanks for your question. "Space" can be a foreign concept, but when you? think of yourself in any challenging situation, you will feel some degree of being trapped, or contracted. In your body, your mind and how you feel. Instead of focussing on that contraction, try to find the space in any part of yourself, your mind (ea counting to 10 before reacting) , your body (directing your breath more into your belly) and your feelings (ea cultivating joy instead of anger).

an important part of the practice is that we build up a routine. When I started yoga (over 10 years ago) I could not touch my toes or do the things I can do today. It takes practice, patience and the endurance of feeling uncomfortable. Believe me, I still feel uncomfortable in my practice today, I just learned to view it differently! And? yes, work at your own level, so you enjoy it more!

wow, a lot of questions! Keeping the toes tucked helps to activate the leg muscles in an even and balanced way. This in turn helps to open the hips more effectively. When the arms are lifted up in downward dog,? it allows the spine to lengthen more freely, the lower back to curve inward so the thighbones can move into the back of the body and come deeper in the hip joint, which will help open the hips more. I hope this clarifies it! Thanks for asking

keep up the good? work!
By: Flowingwithgracenl. on 16 Feb 12, 15:10:54
@bertlindsay; please don't feel discouraged! before you practice some of the deeper hip openers like pigeon, you can work on more beginner level hip openers. Over time, you will be able to do poses like pigeon and get more out? of it.

COuld you show something to reduce? love handles?

Thank you for sharing your yoga wisdom. It is? helping me and my practise as I live in a remote area and do not have a local teacher. This video has a phrase that I'm hoping you can elaborate on for me. "Space". Where am I making this "Space" that you speak of? You talk about it at the 4:10 & 7:12 marks. Thank you!

Thank you? for this sequence and the message. I'm trying to apply this same level of mindfulness to my daily life, in dealing with shyness and fear and other challenges. Pigeon pose seems strangely easier. :)

great video , although i am totally out of stretch, you are? awesome !!!
By: bertlindsay. on 04 Feb 12, 11:53:26
OK, you are right, I will give it some time and enjoy the exercises - may I call it that? - In the mean time. Checked? out Ester's beginners stuff, like that! I am a very down to earth person and don't understand what you guys are on about when you talk about things like breathing out toward your hips, staying present, looking for an opening, etc but I love the stretches and like to thank you for the videos :-)

i dont totally agree? with this video. she explained one of the other. pigeon pose is very hard pose, specially for beginner. i expected that she will demonstrate this in differents ways. and she has too flexible lumbar spine in down dog, so her body cant find really messages too. but anyway, wish you keeping good work! Namaste

I was just thinking about how to put pigeon pose in a sequence - precisely for the purpose of becoming more comfortable with? it. Thanks for the video!

Sandra makes it? look so easy! Inspiring! :) :) :)

I'd fall over at 1:47 . It makes it hard? to follow along with yoga videos when I'm so inflexible, but working on the level that I can. Definitely working through discomfort and fact my body just isn't able to do various pose examples.

I really like the first move you did, the downward facing dog and the bringing one leg back to open the hips, I'm definitely going to start using it. I have some questions. Why do you keep your "toes tucked" when you have one leg behind you? You said to keep your? arms off the floor to engage the legs more to get a better stretch. I don't understand why though. I would think you'd want your legs to be as relaxed as possible and not have to support the weight of your body to get a deeper stretch,
